In a study conducted late last year, researchers from British Heart Foundation highlighted the disparity between men’s and women’s healthcare, especially with regards to treatment following heart attack.
Men and women have different biologies, which means both require different types of treatment for the same heart ailment. Women experience a number of different health factors that contribute to the risk of heart failure. Sex hormones could play a vital role in heart failure as estrogen levels before menopause could affect heart’s ability to function. High blood pressure during menopause could also be one of the reasons. Obesity, which is more common in women than men, can also lead to hear failure.
Moving forward, the researchers hope that more work ca be done to highlight these differences between men and women, as doing so could ensure that women patients with heart failure are receiving best course of treatment.
