Maharashtra’s rising Covid-19 cases have forced the state government to contemplate lockdowns in several districts of the state. A week-long lockdown has already been imposed in Amravati till March 1. The state’s authorities will be monitoring the coming eight days and will decide on a complete lockdown of the state.
India Today’s Data Intelligence Unit (DIU) tracked the jump in daily new cases in the 36 districts of the state since the beginning of this month and found alarming jumps in two specific districts - Amravati and Nagpur.
While Amravati recorded a jump of 546 cases, its adjoining district Nagpur reported a jump of 522 cases. The two districts beat Mumbai City’s 433-cases jump. However, the figures for Mumbai suburban are unavailable.
Both Amravati and Nagpur are located in the state’s northeast. Meanwhile, the central district of Jalna (-19) and four southern districts of Osmanabad (-4), Sangli (-6), Kolhapur (-12), and Nandurbar (-18) recorded a drop in the number of active cases during the same period.
Maharashtra recorded 5,210 active cases as of February 22, adding to India’s total of 1,47,306. So, at the moment every two out of five active cases in India are in Maharashtra. Along with Kerala, the two states comprise 75 percent of India’s active cases.
