The structure that attaches the top lips to the upper portion of the gum, is called the maxillary labial fraenum. Abnormal fraenum (difference between the size of the jaw and size of the teeth) is the most common cause of gapped teeth in the upper jaw. Periodontitis and mesiodens can also be a reason for gapped teeth. This gap between the teeth is called a diastema. The abnormal fraenum is so lightly attached to the gum line that it separates the front two teeth.
It is important to fill the gap because this gap can cause tooth misalignment. A larger gap between the front teeth can leave an insufficient place for adjacent teeth next to it. This may result in tooth displacement and problems while biting. Some people feel extra conscious about their gapped teeth, while some may feel embarrassed and hesitate to smile.
Many times, the gapped front teeth in the upper jaw close by themselves. Baby's teeth start coming from 6 months to 9 months. At this age, front teeth could be gapped, and the fraenum is lightly attached to the gum. 50 to 60% of children under the age of 5 have this gap which usually closes on its own by the age of 8 or 9. If the adult front teeth are gapped, an outbreak of molars helps to bind the front teeth together. About 1 in 10 children have gapped front teeth which don’t get closed by themselves even after growing up.
Procedures helpful in fixing the gap between the teeth
Dental bonding – In this, tooth-colored resin is applied to your tooth, and afterward it is hardened using a special light to make it look natural. This procedure doesn’t require multiple visits to the dentist and is one of the most successful ways to fill such gaps.
Invisalign Braces – These helps in correcting the teeth without revealing their presence. It reduces the gap permanently.
Retainers – It is commonly used for teeth alignment but is also effective in reducing the gap between the teeth. If the gap is due to the shifting of teeth then retainers are the best procedure in fixing the gap.
Implants – If gaps are too much then, dental implants are the best option to place the missing teeth paired with dental crowns, bridges, and dentures. Dental implants either can be fixed or removable teeth. This procedure needs a highly qualified dentist.
Veneers – It is an effective process of filling the gap. Porcelain veneers are used generally for bigger gaps and are much stronger as compared to composite veneers. Composite veneers are used to fill small gaps. It is less expensive.
Orthodontic treatment – This process is usually used when closing one large gap creates another small gap in the mouth.
