Ayurveda is a medical stream of healthcare that works from the root cause. Our life balance depends on Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha.

At Medicircle, we are presenting the Ask The Expert Series for health awareness to understand facts and find solutions related to them. We have come up with the series of Sehat Ki Baat, Karishma Ke Saath. Let’s interact with Expert Karishma Shah about the positive effects of Ayurveda.

Karishma Shah is a Renowned Nutritionist and Plant Diet based Food Coach. She is also a Weight Loss Expert, Diabetes and PCOS Educator & Certified in Psychology of Eating

The effect of Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha

Karishma Shah informs, “For me, as a Nutritionist, Ayurveda is very important. I was always keen on exploring Ayurveda. Ayurveda is an ancient science. Ayurveda works on “Prakriti” which means personal nature or identity. Everybody has a unique identity or Prakriti. Everybody has different body types with their desired requirements. Ayurveda depends on Prakriti, mind, diet and nutrition, the physical aspect of the body, and the psychological aspect. This is one of the beauties of Ayurveda where we incorporate the physical and psychological aspects of the individual. My approach is to apply ancient Ayurveda through the modern aspect.”

All about “Personal Prakriti”

Karishma says, “Understanding the “Personal Prakriti” of every individual is very important. This helps us to identify the various imbalances in the body. Your daily lifestyle should relate to your personal Prakriti to get desired results. Modifying your lifestyle according to three elements Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha can help achieve a healthy life. Age, environment, and stress have a lot of effects on these elements. While case consultation, knowing the present and history of a patient is very important. Western science is taking a new path towards Ayurveda in India. Ayurveda is a beautiful science. Infusing the modern techniques in Ayurveda will help achieve better health parameters”

Balancing Vatta, Pitta and Kapha

Karishma says,” Let me explain this with a very simple example. If your body is dominated by the Pitta element, the chances of your reacting to spicy food are very high. You might like spicy things, but they won't suit your body. Eating spicy food will elevate the heat levels in the body which can create problems like acidity, bloating, gas, constipation, and acne. Understanding your doshas is important. Balancing yourself with neutralizing foods will help you to overcome these problems.”

Know your dominating dosha type

Karishma points out, ”There are two ways to know your body doshas

Go for Ayurveda Dosha Online Check which helps you know about your element  Consult a professional who will help you with BMR, and body type.

On this basis, lifestyle modifications can be done for a better healthy life.”

She further states, “There are cases where all the Tridoshas, Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha can go into imbalance. In such a case, a healthy balance is very important. Lifestyle modifications can help in such a case.”

Know your dosha imbalance

Karishma states, “There are five basic major elements in nature namely fire, water, air, earth and space. Our body's made of these elements which creates sync with nature.

Karishma informs, "The key features of Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha :

Vatta: This represents the air element

Lean body frame  Sensitive to cold air  Fluctuating of metabolism rate Unusual hunger patterns Feels gassy all the time  Low immunity levels

Pitta: This represents fire element or Agni

Average body structure  Sensitive to heat  Restless in nature and quick  Active individuals Aggressive nature like leaders and professional Good metabolism rate  Angry temperament

Kapha: This represents the earth element

Broad body structure and tall body structure  Grounded energy  Lower metabolism rate  Calm composed and gentle  Lazy, does not like exercise  Kapha is related to mucus leading to sinusitis, recurrent cold and cough, and sore throat  They like cold things and cold water Digestive problems like constipation

Neutralizing your doshas with the right food is very important.” says Karishma.

Interchangeability and balancing of the Doshas

Karishma explains, “Kapha dosha is dominated by lethargic energy. They do not like to exert or exercise despite having an athletic body. They are calm and composed. The Kapha element results in laziness. The solution is to provide their body with easily digested food. Since their metabolism rate is slow, they should consume spicy food and warm liquids throughout the day. Reducing intake of cold water and things is very important. Incorporating exercise in them is very essential. This will improve their metabolism rate converting the Kapha element into Pitta. This is the right way to balance your body.” She also explains the interchangeability of the Kapha with Pitta beautifully.

An important piece of advice for girls

Karishma further explains, “The girls who have problems with PCOD and PCOS have higher doshas of element Kapha in them. Balancing Kapha by increasing Agni or fire element in such individuals is very crucial.”
