Cancer is on a high rise. With news breaking on the internet about celebs battling cancer, it is important to know about cancer in detail. Dr. Ajay Gupta answers all the questions related to stages and diagnosis of cancer for early detection and better chances of recovery.

4 Stages of Cancer

Dr. Ajay Gupta informs,” Cancer has 4 stages which are as follows- 

Stage I- Cancer is localized at the origin which is below 2 cm and can be treated. 

Stage II- Cancer may be above 2 cms and spreads to lymph nodes and is treatable. 

Stage III- Has subtypes A, B, and C. This cancer stage spreads to lymph nodes and may involve adjacent structures. They are difficult to operate on and have to be treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. They can be shrinked and then surgery can be done. 

Stage IV- Metastasis of cancer in the body and surgery is not indicated in such cases. 

These stages tell about the extent and spread of cancer in our body. 

Dual cancer problems at the same time 

Dr. Ajay Gupta states, “In most cases, one type of cancer may occur at a time. But, there is a possibility in some prominent cancer cases related to age which may result in two cancer problems at the same time. For example- With age, prostate cancer may occur in males along with blood cancer. There is a higher possibility of cases of genetic cancer as well.

Dr. Ajay Gupta informs, “Cancer can be controlled. As per research, new advancements, techniques, and innovations are coming up to treat cancer. Early-stage cancer can be treated with good chances. Chances of cure are high with early detection of cancers for about 80-90%. 

Diagnosis for cancer 

Dr. Ajay Gupta states, “For cancer diagnosis, cancer screening has to be considered as follows-

Breast cancer- Mammography and Pap smear  Cancer screening at 40-50 years of age. 

Prostate cancer- PSA antigen test- Cancer screening at 50 years of age.  

Lung cancer - especially in smokers, a CT scan is required every year.

Colon cancer- Colonoscopy above 50 years of age especially in western countries 

These are common screening cancers at specific ages. The rest of the cancer screening can be done based on symptoms of cancer. Early detection and doctor consultation are required at the right stage to detect cancer. Some cancers are detected after metastasis.

  1. Green tea and Coffee may lower the risk of several types of Cancer-Dr Ajay Gupta says, “Lifestyle changes can help. It is important to take care and stay away from fried foods, carcinogenic elements, and alcohol, tobacco can benefit.”
  2. Workout helps during cancer treatment-Dr Ajay Gupta says, “It is important to stay motivated and dedicated when on cancer treatment. Both mental and physical health is important. Consult your doctor if you have bone cancer to avoid workouts. You can exercise within limits for good positive and mental health.”

Mobile Phones cause Cancer

- Dr. Ajay Gupta says, “This is a matter of debate. Some statistics show that mobile phones may cause cancer. Some definite research is required for the same.”
