Sugars are carbohydrates and provide energy to the body. Sugars if consumed in higher amounts may cause different health issues. Here are different types of sugars that you must be aware of.

Some sugars are found naturally in foods like milk, honey, fruits, and some are added while preparing dishes. Irrespective of their type, the body breaks down these sugars in the same way into glucose which then enters the bloodstream and provides energy.

Types of sugars

White sugar – It contains 99% sucrose; it is extracted from sugar cane or sugar beet. It comes in the form of castor sugar.

Raw sugar – This is also known as coffee sugar; they also contain 99% sucrose and appear golden-colored.

Brown sugar – It contains 95% sucrose and 5% molasses. It is often used in baking.

Sugar alcohols – These are found naturally in plants. They are used in sugar-free sweets and beverages.

Sugar substitutes – These are artificial sweeteners. Sugar alcohol and sugar substitutes have no calories and are not responsible for tooth decay.

Other than these, fructose and glucose are found in fruits, vegetables, and honey. Lactose is found in dairy products. Maltose is found in malted drinks and beer.

Tips to reduce sugar in your diet

Limit the consumption of sweetened drinks – Try drinking coffee and tea without sugar. Soon you will start loving the real taste of these.

Drink enough water – Plain water is best for your thirst. Try to drink 2-3 liters of water every day to prevent the shortage of water in your body.

Read the ingredients before buying – ‘Sugar-free’, ‘unsweetened’ or ‘no added sugar’ words are being used to replicate the message of a sugarless product. So instead of looking here, try reading nutritional information labels. Here they mention minerals, vitamins, wholegrain, and fiber quantity.
