India witnessed its first case of an Assam doctor getting infected with two COVID variants after taking both doses of vaccine. The doctor was having mild symptoms and therefore did not require hospitalization. Alpha and delta variants were detected. Similar cases of co-infection have been found earlier in UK, Brazil, and Portugal.
The possibility of coinfection in a person could be because of getting infected by different variants or may be due to mutations within the patient after the first infection. It can also occur as a person gets infected with one variant and before the immunity develops, the person gets infected with the second variant in a short time.
The risk of coinfection is high amongst immunocompromised and comorbid patients. Coinfections are possible as the virus is getting mutated and evolved. Vaccination will help in preventing the severity of the infection and the need for hospitalization. Vaccination plays a significant role as it lessens the risk of severity and mortality from infection.
