Typhoid - Foods to eat and to avoid

Diet along with medications is very important for a speedy recovery. Here is the list of food items that need to be eaten and to be avoided in typhoid for quick recovery.

Typhoid is an infectious disease that is caused by Salmonella bacteria. Some common symptoms of the disease include:

Chills and fever
Constipation
Fatigue
Headaches
Fever
Enlargement of the spleen and liver

Foods to eat in typhoid

1. Increase intake of carbohydrates - Porridge, soft rice, baked potatoes are all good food items to add to a typhoid patient’s diet.

2. The patient should be given semi-solid foods like boiled potatoes, khichdi, porridge, boiled rice, and yogurt.

3. Hydration for typhoid patients is very important. It's best to give the patient adequate proportions of fruit juices, lassi, glucose water, lime juice, and coconut water. 

4. A high-calorie diet like banana, potato is also recommended.

5. Soups such as spinach soup, vegetable soup, carrot soup, chicken soup, and mushroom soup can also be given. You can also include dairy products like yogurt, curd.

6. The drinking water should be boiled and filtered properly.

7. Adequate consumption of proteins is required. The meals should be light, easy to digest, and frequent in nature.

 Foods to be avoided

1. Avoid food items that are high in fiber. High fiber content food is difficult to digest and rather it will put pressure on the digestive system. Thus, it’s better to avoid it.

2. Spicy foods and fried food items should strictly be avoided.

3. Avoid food items that cause gas and bloating of the stomach. Certain vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and asparagus can cause gas and bloat the stomach

4. Limit the intake of ghee and butter. Fatty food is harder to digest and can cause complications during typhoid.

5. Dry fruits like nuts, almonds, walnuts, and pista are high in fiber and should be avoided or reduced due to their high fiber content.
