World Hypertension Day: May 17 th 2021- Hypertension is a silent killer and must be controlled well

Blood pressure control is very important for hypertensive patients. This World Hypertension Day, we should raise awareness among all to defeat hypertension. Hypertension is a silent killer and must be dealt with well.

World Hypertension Day is the global awareness day for people suffering from hypertension. It is important to know your number and keep your blood pressure always in check for better results. Blood pressure is a parameter to check your cardiac status. It is very important to raise awareness about this blood parameter so that there is regular and periodic checking of blood pressure. It is important to know its normal levels to check the way the heart beats. Blood pressure is the real arterial pressure when the blood is pumped into the vessels. Blood pressure is determined by the both amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more the heart pumps the blood, the narrower the arteries, the higher the blood pressure. 

It is important to determine the blood pressure values regularly with your general physician who can check your blood pressure. 

All you need to know about Hypertension

Hypertension is a leading risk factor and a life-threatening disease. It is a well-known and very common disease. As per studies, one in every three Indians suffers from hypertension and heart ailments which are responsible for more than 30 % of deaths in India. Blood pressure is the force that is exerted by blood vessels in opposition to the walls of the blood vessels. The pressure shows the working and functioning of the heart. The condition is very common and is determined by the amount of blood the heart pumps and the volume of resistance of blood flow in the arteries. In simpler words, it is the amount of blood the heart pumps, the narrower the arteries, the higher will be the blood pressure. 

Cause of hypertension or high blood pressure

Lifestyles changes  Old age  Lack of physical activity  Stress Family history of blood pressure  Overweight  Excessive smoking  Drinking alcohol 

Hypertension is often referred to as. “The silent killer” because for many reasons. Many times patients are unaware of it. They remain silent about blood pressure and suffer from it thinking that they might need to take long-term medications. But, this is not right. Awareness about hypertension is very important. World Hypertension Day is observed especially on 17 th May 2021 to raise awareness about blood pressure-related problems among the patients. Millions who are affected don't even know they have blood pressure-related problems. 

Early intervention of hypertension is a must 

Blood pressure is quite tricky and must be taken care of at an early stage to avoid any cardiac problems. For instance, there are higher chances that your blood pressure may be temporarily high due to the nervousness of the doctor’s presence. This is termed as “White Coat Hypertension” 

To confirm, if you have blood pressure problems or hypertension, several readings are required. Blood pressure measured at home with a medically approved device is considered as a right reading because you are in a relaxed and calm state of mind. 

Tips to tackle hypertension and control blood pressure 

Remember, high blood pressure cannot be cured but can be controlled and managed well. You need the correct prescription from the doctor after your diagnosis. It is important to take blood pressure medications regularly and equally important to regularly check blood pressure. 

Get your blood pressure checked regularly

It is recommended that you should check your blood pressure regularly especially if you are anxious and very sensitive to stress. Regular screening is very important. 

Maintain a healthy lifestyle is a must

Lifestyle changes can help maintain blood pressure at optimum levels. Maintain regular body weight and include exercise with a healthy diet for the same. 

Monitoring sodium intake is the simplest thing to do

Avoid canned or stored food items and do not include top salt in your meals.
