Would you believe that when you through away the scarps and peels of vegetables, you are essentially throwing away your gateway to good health? The peels and scraps of fruits and vegetables have as much benefit in them as does a fruit or vegetable themselves. Here are certain scraps that are healthy and valuable.

Banana Peels

All of us want to live a happy life, don’t we? But would you believe that serotonin our ‘happy hormone’ is residing inside banana peels? Banana peels contain both serotonin and tryptophan which can help us stay happy and keep our moods elevated. So the next time you eat a banana make sure to keep the peels with you. They can be turned into a traditional sabzi to be had with roti.

Citrus Peels

Just like bananas, the peels of various citrus fruits are also healthy. They contain vitamin C, vitamin B6, calcium, fibre, iron and magnesium. The peels if included in your diet can boost your immunity and provide you with antioxidants. One can boil the peels in water and consume the liquid that remains. Or one can dry these peels under the hot sun and use them as powder along with rose water for beautiful and radiant skin.

Stem / Stalk

A lot of us only focus on the leaves of celery and other green vegetables. We often put the stem of such foods into the bin. But the stem of celery has many nutrients like calcium, vitamin C and magnesium. Use the stem in chutneys or boil them in water and use the water like broths for soups. Similarly, a stalk of cauliflower and broccoli is often put aside. The stalk is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant in nature. Boil them to make them soft and use them in sabzis and salads.
