5 healthy drinks that keep blood pressure under control

"Lifestyle modification and dietary changes can significantly reduce high blood pressure. Studies show that certain healthy drinks can lower blood pressure in long run"

We are so busy in our life that we often neglect our health issues while prioritizing work over everything. Ignoring silly health problems causes us to become victims of many big health-related diseases. Uncontrolled high blood pressure or hypertension is the most common reason for sudden heart attacks in India. 1 in 4 adults have uncontrolled BP in India, among these only half of the percentage is diagnosed and of those only 1 in 10 have blood pressure under control. Lifestyle modification, dietary changes, and medications can reduce high BP and lower the risk of other associated conditions. High BP increases the risk of other heart diseases, stroke, and kidney diseases.

Healthy drinks that help in keeping high BP in control

Coconut water – coconut water is very useful in controlling high blood pressure. Drinking coconut water helps in maintaining body temperature. According to The West Indian Medical Journal, drinking coconut water helps in decreasing systolic blood pressure by 71% and diastolic blood pressure by 29%. This is because coconut water is rich in potassium that helps in diminishing the effect of sodium in our body.

Pomegranate juice - Pomegranate is not only rich in nutrients like folate and vitamin C but also carries anti-inflammatory properties. Pomegranate juice is also known to maintain heart health. In a 2016 study, it was found that this juice helps reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Researchers found that 240 ml of pomegranate juice is enough to reduce diastolic blood pressure.

Hibiscus flower juice – According to a study of Nutritional Journal, hibiscus flower juice has been able to reduce blood pressure. Researchers say that hibiscus tea contains anthocyanin and antioxidants. This can easily decrease the narrowing of blood vessels thereby correcting the blood pressure.

Beetroot juice – Beetroot is advantageous to health in many ways. Beetroot comes in low calorie vegetables that contain health-promoting vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds. This also helps to elevate low blood pressure. According to a study, beetroot juice can be useful in managing high blood pressure. However, raw beetroot juice has a greater effect on blood pressure because it contains enough nitrates.

Tomato juice – Tomato is not only a good source of vitamin C but also helps in controlling blood pressure. Having a glass of tomato juice every day boosts heart health. In a 2019 study, Japanese researchers evaluated the effect of drinking one cup of tomato juice per day among heart risk factors. They concluded that drinking tomato juice helps in rectifying both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Along with this tomato juice also keeps control on LDL and cholesterol level. Apart from this it also protects from unnecessarily sodium concentration in our body. That's why you need to consume it.

DASH Diet – There is a specific diet called DASH Diet which is specifically meant for patients to control their blood pressure. It has 4 - 5 components. One important component is that we should eat more vegetables, fruits, and more low-fat dairy means skim milk or paneer. We should take more fish, poultry and nuts. We have to cut down on the fats, saturated fats, trans fats, and decrease cholesterol in the diet. We should cut down on red meat, sugary drinks, and sugars. So this diet can lower blood pressure and in fact, it is equivalent to one tablet of BP. So if a patient follows this, he will be able to control BP with lifestyle management only.
