Let us give you some details about arthritis and how to prevent it. Before we dive into the topic, let us understand what arthritis is.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints that can result in pain, swelling, stiffness, and inability to move or use the joint normally. Arthritis most commonly affects the knees, hips, spine, hands, fingers, and legs.

What is the pain reason behind arthritis?

The main reason behind arthritis is cartilage damage. The cartilage once damaged or degenerated can be regenerated to some extent depending on various factors such as the age and wear or tear of the joints. It is important to protect the cartilage at a young age to prevent arthritis.

6 things you should do to prevent arthritis

Here are 6 things you can do to prevent arthritis.

Maintain healthy body weight

If you are overweight or obese, it is not only bad for your health but also for your joints. Being overweight puts extra load on the knee joint when one gets involved in an activity. Excessive fat tissue secretes chemicals that cause joint damage. To maintain a healthy BMI, it is important to follow a well-balanced diet.

Avoid smoking and alcohol

Smoking and alcohol can increase the risk of arthritis. It increases oxidative stress and causes damage due to the production of harmful free radicals which can damage the joints. If you are already suffering from smoking, it is essential to give up on smoking to allow the cartilage to repair, restore and regenerate.

Exercise regularly

Performing healthy exercises can improve joint strength and flexibility. It also helps protect the cartilage. One must make sure to exercise 6 times a week for 60 minutes each. Some of the healthy exercises which you can include in your daily routine are as follows- walking, cycling, swimming, and running. If you are already dealing with arthritis, consult your doctor before you start exercising.

Maintain healthy posture

A bad posture for long periods puts an excessive load on the spine and joints. This accelerates the normal process of wear and tear of joints. A healthy alignment is required while standing, sitting, and walking to protect from arthritis.

Wear comfortable shoes with shock absorbers

Wearing the right kind of shoe puts less strain on the joints of the feet, ankles, hips, and spine. Avoid high heels which may aggravate joint pains.

Consuming collagen supplements can help

Collagen supplements and a high intake of protein can help in the regeneration of cartilage to some extent. It is also important not to forget your calcium and Vitamin D supplements as well.
