THANE – In a remarkable feat of medical science and surgical ability, a 91-year-old patient has successfully undergone robotic surgery for endometrial (uterine) cancer at KIMS Hospitals, Thane. This case highlights how age is no longer a barrier to complex life-saving procedures when backed by precision technology.

The Challenge

The patient was diagnosed with Carcinoma Endometrium after a PET CT scan revealed a hypermetabolic uterine lesion. At 91, her age and history of hypertension posed significant surgical and anaesthetic risks. Traditional open surgery would have meant a long recovery period and a higher risk of complications for a nonagenarian.

The Precision Solution

Under the leadership of Dr. Anil Heroor, Director - Oncological Sciences, KIMS Hospitals, Thane  & the surgical team opted for a Robotic-Assisted Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy and Hysterectomy (BSOH) with pelvic lymph node sampling.

Why Robotic Surgery?

• Minimal Blood Loss: Highly precise movements minimise tissue trauma.

• Enhanced Safety: The robotic system provides a 3D, high-definition view, allowing for meticulous dissection even in elderly patients.

• Swift Recovery: Robotic ports (small incisions) replace large abdominal cuts, leading to less pain.

A Remarkable Recovery

The surgery performed was a resounding success. Mrs. Saroj’s recovery exceeded expectations:

• Day 1: She was already out of bed and walking with the help of physiotherapy.

• Day 2: She transitioned to a soft diet and had her catheter removed.

• Discharge: She was discharged in a stable, healthy condition, proving that advanced age does not prevent patients from the benefits of modern oncological surgery.

"This case is a testament to how robotic technology combined with expert care can provide safe, curative options for elderly cancer patients who were previously considered high-risk for surgery."

KIMS Hospitals, Thane, continues to lead the way in integrating robotic excellence with compassionate patient care.
