Allergies are highly prevalent in India. An estimated 20-30% of the population suffers from at least one allergy. About 4.5% of adolescents suffer from food allergies. Allergy is our immune system’s overreaction to certain things. There are primarily two things that cause allergies, either a host or the environment. These two substances are called allergen and the body’s reaction to an allergen is called an allergy.
In an allergy, our white blood cells get activated because of immunoglobulin. In a bid to protect your body from invaders, our antibodies attach themselves to the allergens. This causes an inflammatory response that can either be very mild in nature or even life-threatening. One such life-threatening situation is allergic asthma.
While some allergens cause people to only experience runny noses, watery eyes and itching. Allergic asthma can cause one to have an asthma attack if faced with an allergen. Allergic asthma is a sub-type of asthma that is seen in 90% of all asthma kids and 50% in all asthma suffering adults.
