Walmart's Flipkart has entered the healthcare industry with the launch of its new app - Flipkart Health Plus. The new venture has already onboarded around 500 independent sellers with registered pharmacies.
The venture's CEO is Prashant Jhaveri. Jhaveri was the former executive for Apollo Health. He was appointed as CEO of Flipkart Health Plus in March. They will serve medicines and healthcare products across the remotest part of India. It is going to serve an estimated 20,000 pin codes in all of India.
An estimated $143 million has been pumped into this healthcare subunit. The future plans of the venture are to start e-diagnostics and teleconsultation services. They will also collaborate with third-party healthcare services. They aim to bridge the gap in accessibility in rural India.
The market for e-pharmacy is highly competitive with Reliance Industries taking Netmeds and Tata Group taking 1mg. Along with this, there is competition from Amazon India and Pharmeasy. In November 2021, they had acquired startup SastaSundar for an undisclosed amount.
The app has since in launch created quite a stir. The co-founder of Pharmeasy, Dr Dhaval Shah, has commented that the Flipkart Health+ app has stolen the looks of Pharmeasy’s app with the statement - After all - no one can go wrong after copying the best :)
