Gujarat has recorded its first confirmed case of avian flu after samples of two dead birds from the Junagadh district tested positive. AIR correspondent reports that the state forest department also shut down four bird sanctuaries to contain the spread.
Following the two confirmed cases of bird-flu near Bantva dam in Manavadar in Junagadh district, the officials of the animal husbandry department have begun surveying the 10-kilometer area around the dam.
The state forest department has again closed four bird sanctuaries for the tourists. These bird sanctuaries are Nalsarovar and Thol in Ahmedabad, Khijadiya in Jamnagar, and Porbandar bird sanctuary.
The surveillance has been stepped up in the Kutch region and around village ponds were wild and migratory birds are nesting. According to sources, no birds have been culled so far, as the disease has not been detected in poultry birds.
