Sarson ka saag and makke ki roti is the most popularly consumed dish by North Indians in winters. Maize flour has many health and dietary benefits and is a great source of essential nutrients. Here are five reasons to include this in your daily diet

Very nutritious

Corn can be a great source for many essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin B9, Magnesium, and Potassium, among others.

Useful for eye health

Many studies have found that certain antioxidants can boost eye health and reduce the risk for macular degeneration and cataracts. High levels of Lutein and Zeaxanthin, two such antioxidants found in corn, can help to improve the body’s ability to fight eye infections and degeneration in old age.

Aids in digestion

It has high fiber, fat, and starch content, thereby helps with digestion and absorption in the body. It can help reduce symptoms of cramping, bloating, and constipation. Compared to wheat flour which has 2.7 gm of fiber per 100 gm, maize flour has 4 gm per 100 gm, so it is a great source of fibers in carbs.

Glycemic index score

The Glycemic Index is a measure of how fast a certain food spikes blood sugar and insulin in the body. Foods that have a high glycemic index increase the risk for health conditions such as diabetes. Maize flour ranks low to medium, so it is a healthier way to consume carbs.

Prevents diabetes and Alzheimer

Maize flour provides the body with resistant starch. Resistant starch is a soluble fiber that reduces the pH level of your colon and reduces inflammation. It also aids in the absorption of minerals and improves insulin sensitivity, which directly reduces the risk of chronic diseases like type-2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, among many others.
