How Vitamin B12 deficiency can affect the nerves?

These days many chronic problems have come to light that involve heart issues, cancer, diabetes, and liver problems. Majority of them are known to crop up from nutritional deficiencies. One such nutrient which we are going to talk about is Vitamin B12.

What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that is responsible for our brain and nerve health. It is also an important key nutrient in building DNA and red blood cells in our body. This help maintains one’s overall health and mental well-being on physical and mental levels. It is important to maintain healthy levels of Vitamin B12 in the body. Low levels of vitamin B12 in the body may welcome many health issues and can be dangerous resulting in negative impacts on day-to-day functions. 

Vitamin B12 for the Nervous System 

Vitamin B12 is said to be a key nutrient that helps in regulating the nervous system which is why lack or insufficiency of this vital nutrient can lead to several neurological symptoms. 

How can Vitamin B12 levels be treated?

As per the National Health Services (NHS), most cases of Vitamin B12 deficiency can be treated easily with Vitamin B12-rich foods, or extremely low cases of Vitamin B12 can be treated with supplementation in form of capsules and injections. National Health Services (NHS) is a regulatory health body that warns regarding the deficiency of Vitamin B12 and suggests that- If neurological problems do develop, they may be irreversible. 

A warning sign for Vitamin B12 deficiency

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause loss of nervous functioning affecting the following - 

  • Physical coordination (Ataxia)
  • Difficulty in walking and talking 

The best way to check for Vitamin B12 deficiency is to monitor your activity levels in terms of walking, sitting, or talking. Another way to check for Vitamin B12 deficiency is to check for your overall stamina and capacity to work. It has been proven with research that the walking style of a person or gait speaks a lot about their health. An unsteady walk or walk with feet wide apart is indicative of Vitamin B12 deficiency. Unsteady staggering gait may lead to ataxia with uncoordinated and imbalanced movements in cases of severe Vitamin B12 deficiency. 

Apart from ataxia, there are many other neurological symptoms that may also occur due to a lack of Vitamin B12 deficiency. The other Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms include the following- 

  • Strange sensations 
  • Numbness of tingling in hands, feet, or legs 
  • Swollen or inflamed tongue 
  • Difficulty thinking and reasoning 
  • Weakness and fatigue 
  • Anemia 
  • Reduced capacity to understand things 
  • No desire to work 
  • Gastric disturbance 

So, ensure to monitor your Vitamin B12 levels regularly and consume Vitamin B-rich foods and supplements
