Importance of International Day of Disability

International Day of Disability or the International Day of People with Disability is a special day observed on the 3rd of December to encourage a better understanding of people affected by disability and bring out awareness worldwide together for promoting the equal rights, dignity, and welfare of disabled people. It is important to raise awareness about the benefits of integrating disabled persons in every aspect of life. This involves promoting their overall well-being and health with a balanced life. It is important to create awareness about equal opportunities for disabled people from all walks of life which includes social, cultural, political, and economic structures. 

When was the International Day of Disability first observed? 

The existence of the International Day of Disability was first initiated by United Nations Organization to bring about a change and create awareness worldwide for equal rights for disabled people. International Day of Disability was first observed by the United Nations in 1992.

International Day of Disability is not concerned with mental or physical disabilities per se, but rather encompasses all known disabilities, from Autism to Down Syndrome to Multiple Sclerosis and Cerebral atrophy. International Day of Disability pays tribute to people from all age groups whether children or elderly to promote independence to create a better future for them.

The theme for International Day of Disability is - “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world.”

Did you know that 15% of the world’s population has some form of disability? This accounts for one billion people. This is quite an alarming figure and needs to be addressed. The United Nations Organization has taken a stride to ensure that disabled people can too live quality and normal life by observing the International Day of Disability on 3rd December 2022. However, there are still some important steps to be taken for a better future on a global platform. It is important to encourage people to think about bringing change in the mental and physical aspects of disabled people. It is important to create a society that is inclusive of all to cater to everyone’s needs. 

This day is a perfect opportunity to create awareness and knowledge about disabilities. This includes mental illness, intellectual disabilities, hearing impairments, blindness, aging, and more.
