Traditional Medicine Goes Global: How Ayush 2024 Reimagined Wellness

▴ Ayush 2024
By championing wellness for all, Ayush has redefined what it means to heal not just the body, but also the mind and spirit.

The year 2024 has been a watershed moment for India’s Ministry of Ayush, elevating traditional medicine to the global stage. With path breaking achievements and international collaborations, the ministry has successfully integrated Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (AYUSH) into mainstream healthcare systems worldwide. This marks not just a milestone for India, but also a global reawakening to the potential of holistic health practices.

One of the most significant achievements of the Ministry of Ayush this year was the inclusion of traditional medicine in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) by the World Health Organization (WHO). This step incorporates terminologies and frameworks from Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani medicine into a globally recognized medical classification system. This development is pivotal for research, policy-making, and healthcare delivery, cementing India’s role as a leader in holistic wellness.

With this inclusion, traditional medicine is no longer confined to regional practices. It has gained global legitimacy, enabling the world to appreciate its depth and efficacy. This move not only boosts research opportunities but also encourages a balanced integration of ancient wisdom and modern healthcare practices.

The year began with an inspiring Surya Namaskar program from January 1 to 14, garnering nationwide participation. Gujarat even set a Guinness World Record for Surya Namaskar, sparking similar events at 19 major Sun Temples across India. These programs highlighted yoga’s transformative power, emphasizing its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits.

The International Day of Yoga in 2024 further elevated the practice, with over 24.53 crore people participating globally. This record-breaking event underscored the universal appeal of yoga, showcasing it as a tool for personal well-being and societal harmony.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration of the Central Research Institute of Yoga & Naturopathy (CRIYN) in Jhajjar, Haryana, further validated the government’s commitment to advancing these traditional practices. The Ayush Holistic Wellness Centre, launched at the Supreme Court of India, symbolized the integration of wellness practices into mainstream institutions.

The Ministry of Ayush has expanded its reach through strategic collaborations with international and domestic partners.

Global Partnerships: Agreements with countries like Zimbabwe, Vietnam, and Malaysia have extended the footprint of traditional Indian medicine. These partnerships focus on knowledge sharing, capacity building, and the promotion of wellness tourism.

WHO Collaboration: The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre, established in Jamnagar, Gujarat, stands as a beacon of global health diplomacy. This 10-year, $85 million initiative reinforces India’s leadership in traditional medicine research and development.

Domestic Alliances: An MoU with the Ministry of Women and Child Development aims to improve adolescent nutrition through Ayurveda. This initiative demonstrates how traditional medicine can address contemporary challenges like malnutrition.

The Ministry of Ayush has effectively used events and fairs to showcase the relevance of traditional medicine. At the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, National Arogya Fairs, and Bharat Parv 2024, Ayush presented the vast potential of Ayurveda, Yoga, and other traditional systems in addressing modern health concerns.

A notable highlight was Ayush’s participation in World Food India, where the pavilion emphasized Ayurveda’s role in modern nutrition. By blending ancient dietary principles with current nutritional science, the ministry has positioned Ayurveda as a viable solution for lifestyle-related health issues.

On Unani Day 2024, the release of medicines and e-books showcased the Unani system’s adaptability and growing relevance. Such initiatives reflect a well-rounded approach to promoting various streams of traditional medicine.

Ayush has also embraced technology to revolutionize traditional medicine. Innovations in Artificial Intelligence, robotics, and 3D bioprinting are being explored to modernize healthcare delivery. The ministry has encouraged collaborations between medical and engineering institutions to drive interdisciplinary research.

The use of technology is not limited to treatment innovations. It also includes the digital documentation of traditional medicine practices, ensuring their preservation and global dissemination.

The Ministry of Ayush has made significant efforts to ensure the accessibility of holistic health practices. Such initiatives aim to democratize advanced healthcare technologies, aligning with the government’s vision of a ‘Healthy India.’

The inauguration of the Ayush Holistic Wellness Centre at the Supreme Court reflects a bold step toward embedding wellness practices into the lives of influential institutions. By doing so, the ministry not only promotes health but also normalizes traditional medicine in spaces of authority.

While 2024 has been a landmark year for Ayush, the journey ahead is not without challenges.

1.    Global Acceptance: Despite significant progress, traditional medicine still faces skepticism in some parts of the world. Continued research and evidence-based practices are essential to gain universal acceptance.

2.    Integration with Modern Medicine: Bridging the gap between traditional and allopathic systems requires a collaborative approach, emphasizing complementary strengths rather than competition.

3.    Standardization: As traditional medicine enters the global stage, maintaining quality and authenticity becomes paramount. The inclusion in ICD-11 is a step forward, but more efforts are needed to standardize practices and formulations.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Ayush envisions making India a global leader in traditional medicine by 2047. This aligns with the government’s broader goal of transforming India into a developed nation.

Key focus areas include:

•    Expanding research collaborations with international institutions.
•    Increasing awareness about the preventive and therapeutic benefits of traditional medicine.
•    Enhancing the global reach of Ayush-based healthcare services.

The Ministry of Ayush’s achievements in 2024 symbolize a turning point in the global recognition of traditional medicine. By blending ancient wisdom with modern innovation, Ayush has set the stage for a holistic approach to health and wellness.

From the inclusion in ICD-11 to record-breaking yoga participation and collaborations, the ministry’s efforts reflect a commitment to making traditional medicine a cornerstone of global healthcare. As Ayush continues to grow, it offers a promise of a healthier, more harmonious world.

By championing wellness for all, Ayush has redefined what it means to heal not just the body, but also the mind and spirit.
