Is AI Making Us Less Intelligent? The Hidden Cost of Convenience

Recent findings from a study conducted by Michael Gerlich of SBS Swiss Business School suggest that our increasing reliance on AI tools may come at the expense of critical thinking skills, particularly among younger generations.

The study, titled “AI Tools in Society: Impacts on Cognitive Offloading and the Future of Critical Thinking”, analysed data from over 650 participants aged 17 and above in the UK. It found a strong correlation between extensive use of AI tools and a phenomenon called cognitive offloading, which is the tendency to offload memory and problem-solving tasks to external tools.

Cognitive offloading isn’t inherently new, people have been using tools like calculators or GPS systems for decades. However, the study reveals that the impact of AI-driven tools goes far deeper, potentially eroding critical cognitive faculties. Younger individuals, aged 17-25, who were heavily dependent on AI for tasks like memory recall, decision-making, and problem-solving, showed significantly lower critical thinking scores compared to older participants.

Many participants expressed unease about their dependence on AI tools. They admitted that relying on AI for decisions often left them questioning their ability to think independently. One participant noted, “I sometimes wonder if AI is subtly nudging me toward decisions I wouldn’t normally make.” Another revealed, “I rarely reflect on the biases behind AI recommendations; I tend to trust them outright.”

These statements highlight a pressing issue: the potential for AI’s inherent biases to influence human decision-making. Without the ability to critically assess AI-generated suggestions, individuals risk becoming passive consumers of information rather than active, analytical thinkers.

The study divided participants into three age groups: 17-25, 26-45, and 46 and older. Unsurprisingly, the youngest group showed the highest reliance on AI tools and the lowest critical thinking abilities. This finding raises concerns about the long-term cognitive effects of growing up in an AI-dominated world.

Older participants, who grew up without the pervasive presence of AI, exhibited greater skepticism and a higher capacity for independent problem-solving. This generational divide underscores the importance of fostering critical thinking skills in younger populations before their reliance on AI becomes deeply ingrained.

The study’s findings have far-reaching implications for education. As AI continues to evolve and integrate into professional and personal spheres, educational institutions must address the cognitive challenges it presents.

Schools and universities must prioritize teaching critical thinking skills alongside digital literacy. Rather than discouraging AI use altogether, educators should encourage students to engage critically with these tools. This means questioning AI-generated information, understanding its limitations, and identifying potential biases.

One potential solution is to introduce structured critical thinking exercises in curricula. For instance, educators could design assignments that require students to cross-verify AI-generated content with traditional research methods. By doing so, students can develop the habit of analysing and evaluating information rather than accepting it at face value.

Moreover, integrating discussions about AI ethics and biases into the classroom could help students understand the broader implications of AI reliance. For example, students could explore case studies of AI failures or controversies, such as biased algorithms in hiring processes or racial profiling in facial recognition systems.

The study also has implications for workplaces, where AI tools are increasingly being used to streamline decision-making processes. Employers must recognize the risk of over-reliance on AI and invest in training programs that promote critical thinking and ethical considerations.

Organizations could implement workshops on AI literacy, focusing on how to interpret and question AI outputs. This would not only improve individual decision-making but also foster a culture of accountability and transparency.

Another critical aspect highlighted by the study is the issue of AI bias. Many participants admitted that they rarely questioned the recommendations made by AI tools, assuming them to be neutral and objective. This misplaced trust can have serious consequences, especially when AI algorithms reflect the biases of their creators or the data they were trained on.

For instance, AI-driven hiring platforms have been criticized for perpetuating gender and racial biases, while AI systems used in the legal system have faced scrutiny for disproportionately targeting marginalized communities. These examples expose the importance of understanding the limitations and ethical implications of AI tools.

The study by Michael Gerlich serves as a wake-up call for society. While AI undoubtedly offers immense benefits, from increased efficiency to enhanced problem-solving, it is crucial to strike a balance between leveraging its capabilities and preserving our cognitive abilities.
