Researchers at the Shivaji University Kolhapur (SUK) have received a patent for the chemical complex (molecule) drug synthesised in a university lab which showed anti-breast cancer properties.
Assistant Professor Prakash Bansode under the guidance of Gajanan Rashinkar synthesised the drug molecule for over 3 months.
The molecule contains a Ferrocine compound which normally kills normal cells also during chemotherapy apart from destroying normal cells. To overcome the problem researchers coupled the compound with Carbene structure to which they added metallic components such as Gold, Silver and Platinum.
According to the researchers, the drug was screened at Advanced Cancer Research Centre of Tata Memorial. The patent application which was filed in March 2018 was reviewed and the drug was granted a 20 years product patent.
