In a transformative move aimed at revolutionizing digital health education across India, the National Health Authority (NHA) and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to integrate digital health fundamentals into medical training and enhance the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Health Minister, Shri J P Nadda.
The partnership represents a pivotal step in embedding digital health education within medical curricula, thereby laying the groundwork for a more cohesive and effective healthcare ecosystem. The collaboration will see MUHS offering its Digital Health Foundation Course (DHFC) to NHA and jointly developing additional digital health programs to support ABDM's rollout.
Shri J P Nadda emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “This partnership marks a milestone in integrating digital health education into medical training, setting the stage for a more connected and efficient healthcare system. It will not only enhance the skills of medical professionals but also facilitate the broader implementation of ABDM, ultimately improving access to quality care for millions of Indians.”
He highlighted the importance of continuous capacity-building for health workers, stating, “This MoU will support ongoing training efforts, strengthen the digital teaching landscape, and contribute to the effective implementation of Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). I commend MUHS for designing a need-based course that will enhance the capabilities of our health workforce.”
Smt. Deepti Gaur Mukerjee, CEO of NHA, noted, “Digital health is an evolving field that requires widespread awareness and understanding. Our collaboration with MUHS will accelerate the adoption of digital health solutions across India, ensuring that future healthcare professionals are well-prepared to utilize these technologies for improved patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.”
Lt Gen Madhuri Kanitkar (Retd), PVSM, AVSM, VSM, Vice-Chancellor of MUHS, added, “As Maharashtra becomes the first state in India to incorporate Digital Health education for all medical students, we are proud to support NHA in the national rollout. This initiative is crucial in equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary for the digital transformation of healthcare.”
The Digital Health Foundation Course (DHFC), developed by MUHS with support from the Koita Foundation, offers a comprehensive overview of digital health principles for doctors and healthcare providers. The curriculum, designed by leading experts, will be made available to medical students, in-service doctors, and healthcare professionals through platforms including Mission Karmayogi’s iGOT platform, providing opportunities for certification and continuing medical education credits.
Senior officials from the Union Health Ministry, including Shri Apurva Chandra, Union Health Secretary, and Shri Rizwan Koita, Director of Koita Foundation, were present at the event, underscoring the collaborative effort to advance digital health education in India.
