The Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) has taken a tough stand against using stem cells to treat psychiatric disorders, especially Autism. They feel the stem cell therapies are questionable and though they may have potential for regenerative medicine, it doesn’t have place in the current form of psychiatry therapy.
The statement issued by the Society says till now no scientifically validated and scrutinised research evidence is there to prove that stem cells are indeed helpful in psychiatric disorders, including Autism.
The IPS said psychiatric disorders, including Autism, are combined derangements of both neuro-development and neuro-degenerative trajectories. So they actually are symptomatic manifestations of a variety of pathogenic processes about which scientific evidence is yet inconclusive.
