Overhydration can be harmful to your body

Can drinking 8 glasses of water keep you healthy and improve performance. Doctors don’t agree.

Keeping your body hydrated all through the day seems to have become the latest fad among health freaks. It seems water in recent years has become an elixir for almost all kinds of physical and mental health problems. If you are feeling sluggish, they say drink more water. If you are feeling uninspired and hopeless about your career or love life, ask yourself how much water have you had today?

On January 1, 2020, Twitter was flooded with resolutions to drink more water. But will conscious hydration make for a more productive 2020 ? Experts say there is no direct evidence that a little bit of dehydration really adversely affects someone’s performance. For those who have desk jobs, it’s best to drink only when feel thirsty, and not at fixed intervals.

Overhydrating oneself does not help, says researchers. At best, your body throws it out, and at worst sodium and electrolyte levels in your body drop to dangerously low level resulting in hospitalisation and in severe cases death.
