Singapore's Indian opposition leader to donate part of his salary

Pritam Singh, 43, was designated Leader of the Opposition for the first time in Singapore's parliamentary history

Pritam Singh, Singapore's previously assigned Leader of the Opposition, will distribute half of his stipends to help low-salary occupants in his electorates, a media report said today.

Mr. Singh, 43, was assigned Leader of the Opposition without precedent for Singapore's parliamentary history on Tuesday after the Indian-root legislator drove the Workers' Party as its Secretary-General to a record 10-seat win in the July 10 general races.

He would be agreed on extra benefits and get twofold the stipend of a chosen Member of Parliament, the parliamentary specialists reported.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Mr. Singh said he had talked about the extra compensation with his better half Lovleen Kaur Walia and its suggestions.

As the Opposition chief, he is to get 385,000 Singapore dollars (USD 280,014) yearly.

"The two of us felt emphatical that a level of the pay ought to be utilized for a more prominent reason," the Channel News Asia cited Singh as saying in the Facebook post today.

Mr. Singh said he would dispense "50 percent of the compensation after assessments" to help low-salary inhabitants in Hougang Single Member Constituency and the two Group Representation Constituencies (GRC) of Aljunied and Sengkang, from where voters gave the Workers' Party a 10-seat win.

The races for 93 seats were ruled by the decision People's Action Party of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

The PAP won 83 seats in the overall races and his legislature was confirmed on Monday.

Mr. Singh would likewise spend some portion of his 50 percent recompenses on different requirements of his Workers' Party and different causes.

"It is a respect for me to fill in as a chosen MP in Singapore. Similarly, it is a benefit to be named as the Leader of the Opposition," said Mr. Singh.

"My Workers' Party partners and I are fortunate to have the chance to serve Singapore," he said.

Mr. Singh, a legal counselor, said the arrangement of Leader of the Opposition would likewise require greater speculation of his time and long hours from his family.

"The Leader of the Opposition arrangement conveys with its numerous extra duties that I should bear."

"The street ahead won't be simple, yet I express gratitude toward Singaporeans for their help and consolation," he said.

Mr. Singh has been an individual from parliament for Aljunied GRC since May 7, 2011

Singapore's fourteenth Parliament will have its first sitting on August 24.
