What is Neotame?

Neotame is a potent artificial sweetener, approximately 7,000 to 13,000 times sweeter than regular sugar and 30 to 70 times sweeter than aspartame. It is commonly used in various products labeled as "diet," "no-sugar added," and "sugar-free," including soft drinks, dairy items, frozen desserts, and baked goods.

Potential Health Risks

The recent study conducted by ARU researchers revealed alarming findings:

- Neotame disrupts the balance of healthy gut bacteria, potentially leading to gut-related conditions.
- It weakens the gut wall, a vital component of intestinal health, thereby compromising overall gut integrity.
- Neotame directly damages the intestinal lining and epithelial cells, which play crucial roles in gut health.

Impact on Gut Microbiota

Laboratory experiments demonstrated that exposure to neotame resulted in adverse responses in common gut bacteria like E. coli and E. faecalis, including increased adhesion to and invasion of cells. Such disturbances in gut microbiota can contribute to metabolic and inflammatory diseases.

Neotame was approved by the US FDA in 2002 and the European Union in 2010, although its usage remains relatively limited compared to other artificial sweeteners.
