World Music Day – June 21

▴ World Music Day
World Music Day is celebrated every year on June 21st to encourage young and amateur musicians to keep performing. This day is also known as Make Music Day. Sing or play your favourite instrument to relax or enjoy! The theme of World Music Day 2021 is “Music at the intersections”.

Covid 19 can restrict several activities but one thing that does not get restricted is music. Music can be played anywhere and anytime. Nothing has as much power to elevate our moods as music. The first World Music Day was celebrated on June 21st 1982 in France. Fleuret, French composer, music journalist and radio producer initiated this event. Gradually this day started being observed globally. Soon countries like India, Malaysia, China, Japan, Peru, Australia, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, UK and US adopted it and now it is celebrated in more than 120 countries. Public performances, concerts, music festivals have been organized over the years at small and big events worldwide.

Pandemic should not stop the spirit of music

We have been spending lots of time online these days as everything is happening virtually. If you are a virtual buff, then organize something virtually so that you can play your music in front of an online audience. Otherwise, you can have a quiet time to yourself by practicing any of your beloved musical instruments or if you are a singer, then by singing your favourite songs. It would give you the much-required happiness of doing something that you love. It would also lift up the moods of the people around.

Another way could be to record short clippings of your singing and share in your social network groups and tell others to do the same. Do anything you feel best to remove the monotony of being confined. If nothing like these interests you then just quietly listen to the music of your favourite singers or musician. It will certainly help you beat the lockdown blues. Music is the only thing that would help you find calmness in the middle of calamity.

Why is music beneficial?

It’s a known fact that music makes a person happier by relieving stress and reducing depression. It helps in learning and memory and can help in resolving problems with sleep as well. There are many kinds of therapeutic music like the sounds of rivers, waterfalls, nature in full glory with birds chirping, and also quiet meditation music with chanting of OM etc. Listen to whatever soothes you or helps you chill and relax and enjoy!
