World Ovarian Cancer Day is an important day where people around the world come together to raise public awareness about ovarian cancer. It is important to focus on its causes, symptoms, treatment, and prevention. It is one day of the year where we all women across the globe can come together and fight this crippling disease. We must know the details of ovarian cancer so that we can fight this disease right from the core and prevent its detrimental effects on the body. Here is all you need to know about ovarian cancer. 

Ovarian cancer is at a high rise in women over 35 years of age. 

Ovarian cancer is cancer arising from the cells of the ovaries and the fallopian tubes. There are different kinds of ovarian cancers. Each type is classified based on the tissues they originate. Scientifically speaking, every woman over the age of 35 years is highly prone to cancerous conditions. Every woman is at higher risk of developing cancer. It is the 8 most common cause of death worldwide. 

Symptoms for ovarian cancer 

Pain in the pelvic or lower abdomen region  Persistent bloating and flatulence Excessive bleeding  Prolonged periods and heavy periods  Changes in urinary urgency and frequency  Changes in bowel movements  Increase in frequency of bowels or constipation  Abnormal and irregular periods with spotting  Extreme tiredness and exhaustion  Weakness and fatigue  No desire to work  Unexplained weight loss  Feverish feeling 

Risk factors for ovarian cancer 

Some women are at high risk or more prone to develop this ovarian cancer. Early detection is a key to early intervention and a good prognosis

Age: As age advances in women, they have higher chances to get cancer. It is more commonly seen in elderly women especially in old age from 50-70. However, younger women after 35 years can also get ovarian cancer.   Family history: Women who have a strong history of ovarian cancer in the family are highly prone to cancer.  Ethnicity: Jewish women from Eastern backgrounds have a high risk of developing ovarian cancer.  Genetic mutations: having certain genetic mutations will be associated with ovarian cancer puts you at higher risk.  Hormonal replacement: If you are taking any HRT (Hormonal Replacement Therapy) such as estrogen and progesterone or contraception then you are at higher risk of developing ovarian cancer,  Endometriosis: Women who are highly prone to endometriosis or who have gone through one episode of endometriosis have a higher risk of ovarian cancer.  Reproductive history: Women who have not delivered children are at higher risk of developing ovarian cancer. 

Reducing the risk and prevention of ovarian cancer is a must 

Some factors must be taken into consideration to help reduce ovarian cancer. However, it is important to note that reducing the risk factors can help a great deal in controlling and prevention this ovarian cancer. 

Hysterectomy or tying your fallopian tubes- Removal of the uterus and ovaries can help to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding - Both breastfeeding and Pregnancy helps in balancing the hormones and ovulatory cycles which is a good factor for women’s health.
