Researchers at John Hopkins Medicine say they have further characterised a set of chemical imbalances in brains of the people with Schizophrenia related to chemical glutamate.
Schizophrenia is marked by hallucinations, delusions, and disordered thinking, feeling, behaviour, perception, and speaking. Drugs used to treat Schizophrenia do not work on everyone, and can cause desirable side effects, including metabolic problems increasing cardiovascular risks, involuntary movement, restlessness, stiffness, and shaking.
Further research is still needed to learn whether sulforaphane, a chemical found in broccoli sprout extract can safely reduce symptoms of psychosis or hallucinations in people with Schizophrenia. An optimal dose is needs to be determined to see how long people must take it to observe an effect.
