Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on July 1, 1882, and on the same date, he died in 1962. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna on 4 February 1961 for his contribution to the field of medical science. He is still considered as the greatest Chief Minister of West Bengal and a visionary to develop the state as a lot of industrial development took place in the state after independence.

Dr. Bidhan Chandra Rai gave quality health to the common people. He provided services and established some prominent medical institutions across India He was instrumental in establishing the Indian Institute of Mental Health, the Infectious Diseases Hospital, and the first postgraduate medical college in Calcutta. As Mayor of Calcutta Municipal Corporation, He introduced a proposal to study the effects and prevention. He promoted free education, free medical aid, better roads, better lighting, and a water supply. As he restored law and order in the state, he laid the foundation of five major cities, Durgapur, Kalyani, Bidhannagar, Ashoknagar and Habra. He gifted his house to the people of Bengal in 1961. The Government of India honored him with Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, on February 4, 1961.
