Hingoli, Maharashtra - 3rd October, 2024: Sightsavers India, in collaboration with Bridgenext, has initiated the Netra Vasant Rural Eye Health Programme in the Hingoli district to provide essential eye care services to underserved communities. Implemented by Aurangabad Chikalthana Lions Eye Hospital, the program aims to screen the rural population for eye problems, referring those needing cataract surgery or other treatments to the partner hospital.

Hingoli was chosen as the intervention district due to its population of over 1.2 million, with 85% residing in rural areas. The low-income levels exacerbate challenges in accessing eye care, especially for those engaged in agriculture and labour-intensive jobs where vision loss can significantly impact their livelihoods. Additionally, the district's high proportion of marginalized and tribal communities makes them particularly susceptible to undiagnosed or untreated vision problems.

The launch event was attended by representatives from Sightsavers India, Bridgenext, Aurangabad Chikalthana Lions Eye Hospital, and local government health officials, marking the start of an important effort to address eye health issues in the region.

Maitreyee Mitrasyal, VP – Human Resources at Bridgenext, emphasized the initiative's significance, stating, "At Bridgenext, we are deeply committed to supporting initiatives that have a lasting impact on people's health and well-being. The Netra Vasant programme exemplifies our belief in creating accessible healthcare for all, and we are proud to contribute to the betterment of the communities in Hingoli."

RN Mohanty, CEO of Sightsavers India, highlighted the importance of this initiative in bridging the gap in eye care access in rural areas, "By partnering with Bridgenext and Aurangabad Chikalthana Lions Eye Hospital, we aim to provide comprehensive eye care to the low-income populations of Hingoli. By contributing towards preventing avoidable blindness, we are aiming to ensure that quality eye care is creating a lasting change for a brighter future."

Ln. Ramesh Pokerna, Trust Secretary of Aurangabad Chikalthana Lions Eye Hospital, added, "We are proud to be part of this noble mission. Through this programme, we will ensure that the people of Hingoli have access to comprehensive eye care, including cataract surgeries that can restore vision and improve quality of life."

The Netra Vasant Rural Eye Health Programme is set to screen individuals across Hingoli, ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions, including free cataract surgeries for those in need. The program underscores the power of collaboration in addressing critical healthcare gaps and enhancing the quality of life for underserved populations.
