Senior International Olympic Committee (IOC) official Dick Pound said Monday a deferment of the current year's Tokyo Olympics is presently inescapable as the world reels from the coronavirus pandemic.
The IOC said on Sunday the body would hold up four additional prior weeks declaring its choice on the destiny of the July 24-August 9 Games, amid mounting calls for them to be rescheduled.
Pound anyway accepts the IOC - which precluded an abrogation of the Games - is presently laying the basis for a deferment.
"My translation of the IOC's interchanges is they would prefer not to drop, and they don't figure they can proceed with the July 24 date," Pound told AFP. "So you're taking a gander at the 'P' word - deferment.
"They will investigate choices with the Japanese obviously, and afterward there a wide range of partners - global organizations, NOCs, competitors.
