The total infections have mounted 6.46 lakh while the recoveries have soared up to nearly 5.92 lakh. Chennai continues to report more cases of Covid-19 as compared to the other districts in Tamil Nadu, reflecting its huge population. However, as a positive indicator, the case doubling time in the city has gone up to an average of 93 days when all its 15 zones are taken together. Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation has reintroduced the concept of containment zones recently. Those clusters like a street or a bunch of contiguous streets having three or more index cases are declared as containment zones. Index cases are those who do not know from where they got the infection. If five or more new patients with known contact history are reported from a particular area, that is also considered as a containment zone. Currently, 70 such containment zones are there in the city. In such places, infection control measures are being undertaken in a more stringent manner.
