We have been hearing since childhood, and it’s been said to be an age-old truth, that honey is far healthier than sugar because of its natural properties. However, that’s not true. Honey and sugar are hardly any different from each other when it comes to composition and constituents.
Honey is a mixture of glucose and fructose. They both are types of sugar. Like ordinary sugar, it is absorbed fairly rapidly in the bloodstream and has a similar effect on your body as sugar has. In spite of its healthy image, honey contains only traces of vitamins and minerals, so apart from providing calories, it makes negligible contribution to diet.
Honey contains fewer calories – 288 per 100 gms. – whereas sugar contains 394 per 100 gms., since one quarter of its weight is water. Moreover, honey tastes sweeter than sugar. If you didn’t know, one tablespoon of honey weighs more than one tablespoon of sugar since its denser. So substituting honey for sugar in terms of volume and weight, would in fact give you more calories.
