In a study by researchers from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, comparing the level of mental health amongst smokers and non-smokers, it was revealed that cigarette smoking is not only injurious to your lungs but also leads to poor mental health. The conclusion was drawn based on the answers given by 2,000 students enrolled at various Serbian Universities with different socio-political and economic environments.
The study highlighted the fact that students who smoked had rates of clinical depression that were twice or thrice higher than their non-smoking peers. At the university of Pristina, 14% of smokers suffered from depression as opposed to 4% of their non-smoking peers. At University of Belgrade the numbers were 19% and 11% respectively.
Moreover, students who smoked had higher level of depression symptoms and lower mental health scores in terms of vitality and social functioning than non-smokers.
