A 39-year-old woman from Niger, West Africa, presented to the outpatient department of Aakash Healthcare Super Specialty Hospital, Dwarka struggling with super morbid obesity and its associated health complications.
Mrs. Khumalo (name changed) weighing 186 Kg and body mass index (BMI) of 65.9 kg/m2 faced significant challenges in life due to her weight. She battled type 2 diabetes, hypertension, joint pain, bronchial asthma and snoring for several years. Despite her repeated attempts to lose weight including supervised diets and physical exercise, the weight gain continued, confining her to a wheelchair with very limited activity and hindering her ability to care for her family.
At Aakash, she was thoroughly evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, cardiologists, respiratory specialists, psychologists, and anaesthesiologists to ensure the best possible outcome. Following a battery of tests including physical exams, stress tests, lung function tests, and digestive system examinations she was recommended to undergo a bariatric surgery as the optimal solution for her problems.
Dr. Nikhil Agnihotri, Laparoscopic and General Surgeon, Aakash Healthcare Super Specialty Hospital, Dwarka shared details of the surgery stating, “The woman underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, a minimally invasive procedure that restricts the stomach size to promote weight loss. The surgery was successful, with an uneventful recovery, allowing her discharge on the third post-operative day.”
“Bariatric surgery offers significant benefits beyond weight reduction. For Mrs. Khumalo, it holds the potential to, reduce or eliminate the need for medications for diabetes and hypertension, improve mobility and quality of life and decrease the risk of life-threatening complications associated with obesity,” said Dr. Aashish Chaudhry, Managing Director of Aakash Healthcare Super Specialty Hospital in Dwarka,
Just 12 days post-surgery, Mrs. Khumalo displayed remarkable progress. She regained mobility without support and lost 9 kgs. Her blood sugar levels even normalized without medication. Typically, patients are advised supplemental medications and periodic follow up in post operative period for monitoring their progress. The South African national is expected to lose around 90-100 kgs in the coming year, with a significant improvement or potential resolution of her co-morbidities. She will continue to receive follow-up care and support to ensure her continued success. Bariatric Surgery helps loosing weight and associated problems and also in long term maintenance of weight loss.
This case highlights the effectiveness and safety of bariatric surgery when performed in well-equipped centers and at the hands of experienced surgeons. For patients struggling with super morbid obesity and its debilitating effects, bariatric surgery can offer a life-changing opportunity to regain health and well-being.
