Often misunderstood with lightheadedness, vertigo is the false sense that you or your immediate surrounding is spinning. Learn its causes and effective home remedies.

Often misunderstood with lightheadedness, vertigo is the false sense that you or your immediate surrounding is spinning. This feeling is eerily similar to motion sickness. One will feel his/her balance off. There are two types of vertigo.

The first is Peripheral vertigo. It is the most common type of vertigo experienced by anyone. It is caused by an inner ear problem. Here, the canaliths or minuscule calcium particles get away from their commonplace and start collecting in the inner ear. This throws your balance off.

The other type of vertigo is Central vertigo. Here the problem lies in the brain. This type of vertigo can be a result due to stroke, brain tumour, brain injuries or even migraine.

Causes -

Check your medication as certain medicines can cause you to experience long spells of dizziness.  If you suffer from migraines then vertigo could be a common occurrence.  Fluid buildup in the inner ear can trigger vertigo. This is seen in Meniere’s disease.  Similarly, infections in the inner ear can also cause vertigo Infection in the vestibular nerve can also cause vertigo. This infection is called vestibular neuritis.

Treatments -

Almonds are a good source of vitamin A, B, E and other vital essential nutrients. Having a handful of almonds a day can help cure vertigo. Stay hydrated throughout the day. A hydrated body will experience fewer amounts of vertigo.  Smelling essential oil can help you get out of the spell of dizziness. Carry a handkerchief infused with a few drops of essential oils. Instead of having medicine, if you wish to go natural then buy a Chinese herb named Ginkgo biloba. This is very effective in treating vertigo.

If still the problem persists, then do check with your doctor for the best solution.
