International Youth Day 2022: To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the world needs to tap the full potential of all generations. International Youth Day: History

  • On December 17, 1999, the United Nations decided to celebrate this day as International Youth Day every year.
  • It was based on a recommendation made at the United Nations General Assembly, by the World Conference of Ministers responsible for the welfare of youth in Lisbon.
  • The first International Youth Day was celebrated on 12 August 2000. The United Nations declared 1985 the International Year of Youth.

After several rounds of negotiations and deliberations, the United Nations officially declared August 12 as International Youth Day. After the official declaration of the United Nations, the first International Youth Day was celebrated all over the world on 12 August 1999. After this, International Youth Day was celebrated every year on 12 August. Along with competitions, speech essays, etc. started being organized on International Youth Day.
