Diuretics help to remove excess body fluids by promoting urine production through kidneys. Excess water retention can cause swollen hands, feet, ankles. Because of excess water retention, the body looks puffy. This is more common in the older population. There are certain health conditions that can cause fluid retention which include – kidney stones, diabetes, hypertension, PCOS, congestive heart failure.

Tips to reduce fluid retention

Drink sufficient water, stay hydrated – This will prevent dehydration, and maintain fluid balance.

Limit your salt intake – Restrict your salt intake. A high salt diet causes fluid retention. 

Include potassium-rich food – Consuming protein-rich food like banana and sweet potato can increase urine production and lower sodium levels, by reducing fluid retention.

Exercise – Doing regular physical activity helps in removing extra fluid by increasing the blood flow to tissue and making you sweat.

Increase your magnesium intake – Magnesium helps in regulating the body’s fluid balance. Magnesium supplements have proven to reduce fluid retention in women with premenstrual syndrome.

Natural alternatives that help excrete excess fluid

Coffee – It is a natural diuretic because of its caffeine content. But if you take it regularly, you will build a tolerance to coffee’s diuretic properties.

Dandelion – Dandelion contains a high amount of potassium content as the active compound that promotes kidney function and eliminates excess fluid.

Horsetail – Horsetail is conventionally used as a diuretic for mild water retention.

Hibiscus – Hibiscus tea is an incredible supplement that increases kidney filtration and urine output. 

Green tea and black tea – Caffeine content in both green and black tea shows a mild diuretic effect, increases urine production and eliminates excess fluid. 

Hawthorn – Potent phytonutrients in hawthorn act as a natural diuretic and treat kidney problems.
