Bleeding gums can be quite a spontaneous sight. You can observe a pink tinge on your sink after brushing your teeth or can feel blood oozing out of your mouth. This is a telling sign and should not be taken lightly. The cause for sudden blood pour could be inflammation of the gums. A simple way you can check whether your gums are inflamed or not is by checking their colour.  Inflamed gums appear red and swollen while healthy gums are light pink in colour.

Another reason why you can observe bleeding gums is due to the building of plaque on your teeth. If plaque is not eliminated, then over the period of some time it builds into tartar or calculus. This can create inflamed gums and bleeding of the gums. Fortunately, brushing twice a day and flossing can eliminate plaque buildup.

Bleeding from the gums is a serious problem and should not be ignored. It is a telling sign of serious and chronic medical problems like HIV, diabetes and more. If despite good oral hygiene, you observe bleeding consult your doctor immediately. Other signs that explain bleeding from the gums -

- Vitamin K deficiency

- Vitamin C deficiency

- Iron overload

- Hard toothbrush

- Aggressive brushing

- Use of blood thinners (like aspirin)

- Hormonal imbalance (during puberty or pregnancy)

Precautions -

Use a soft-bristled brush and brush your teeth twice a day. Flossing is important and do it once a day. If plaque formation is not cleared early, it transforms into gingivitis and periodontitis. During pregnancy, having diabetes and blood pressure, bleeding in the gums is common. But still one must consult their doctor if this happens repeatedly. Examination by the dentist will help rule out certain issues like malnutrition and diabetes mellitus.
