Causes, Symptoms, Treatment of Thyroid Disorders

Dr. Prashant Kewle informs about treatment for thyroid. It is important to take care of symptoms at the initial stage and detect the thyroid at an early stage. He also mentions important protocols for pregnancy to check for thyroid problems.

Dr. Prashant Kewle is ENT/ Otorhinolaryngologist in Chembur, Mumbai, and has an experience of 23 years in this field. Currently, He practices at Abhyankar Hospital in Sion, Mumbai. He is a member of the Medical Council of India (MCI). His areas of interest are Rhinoplasty, Stapedectomy, M. L. Scopy,  Allergy specialist, and Thyroidectomy.

Detection of the thyroid problem

Dr. Prashant Kewle says, ”Thyroid problem is detected by - 

  • Swelling of the neck which is visible and palpable
  • Weight gain 
  • Increase in appetite
  • Constipation
  • Blood test TSH for hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
  • Infection 
  • Checking for thyroid hormone 
  • Fast thinking 
  • Fast metabolism 
  • Lean person 
  • Diarrhea 
  • T3 T4 TSH 
  • Nodules and swelling in the neck 

There are many types of thyroidism - 

  • Hyperthyroidism 
  • Hypothyroidism 

Thyroid medicine is given in the morning.” 

Thyroid problem pregnancy

Dr. Prashant Kewle states, “Pregnancy is a play of many hormones. The main hormones that control the brain are - 

  • FSH
  • LH 
  • TSH 

A change in hormones can cause fast metabolism and may lead to abortion. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism may both cause a change in metabolism. Thyroid disorders can affect the chances of pregnancy and conceiving. Due to a lack of metabolism, the chances of conceiving are low. As per pregnancy protocol, a thyroid profile with T3, T4, and TSH is a must. This will help you give good results if your hormones are kept normal in a healthy condition through medications. Pregnancy will affect the thyroid.”

Cure for thyroid-related ailments

Dr. Prashant Kewle informs,”The causative factor for thyroid related ailments must help cure the thyroid issues. If there is a swelling or lump- 

  • Surgery can be done 
  • Medications can be considered
  • Controlling with medications till pregnancy 
  • Surgery post pregnancy 
  • Radio-iodine can help after pregnancy 
  • Long term medications 
  • In case of hypothyroidism, only medications are taken."

Surgery for thyroid 

Dr. Prashant Kewle states, “There is no major scar mark in the neck in case of surgery due to thyroid. This is not bad at all. There is a minor line in the case of thyroid surgery. Endoscopy surgery can help through the mouth or armpit. There are certain limitations due to the small size of the lump. One incision can help in removing the thyroid lump.”
