Holistic health – Aspects and Importance

A person’s health can be measured in different ways. Holistic health refers to optimal wellness in the physical, mental, and spiritual sense. Learn about the five aspects of holistic health so as to live a healthy way of living

Holistic health or holistic healing is defined as a form of healing that looks at the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. This kind of holistic healing often involves multiple complementary medicines and alternative healthcare practices. Alternative healthcare practices include chiropractic, massage, therapy, yoga, acupuncture, physiotherapy, nutrition, herbal treatment, etc.

Five aspects of holistic health

Physical health – Physical health comprises the physical body that often shows us physical signs and symptoms of an illness or disease condition. When it comes to supporting your physical health there are a few key practices that everyone can benefit from:

Take quality sleep for 7-9 hours a day. Eat a nutrient-dense diet that is high in plant-based foods and organic food. Regular exercise for 30 minutes each day (exercise and yoga). Limit junk, fried, and processed foods. Avoid smoking and drinking.

Emotional health - Our emotional health is just as important as our physical health. Support your emotional health with

Seek out therapy when needed.  Practice mindfulness and stress reduction habits that can help you better manage life’s daily stressors. Keep a record of your good deeds, sometimes it helps in being positive in stressful times.

Social health - Happiest people on earth have high social skills and social intelligence. This helps in building strong relations with friends, family, and community. Ways you can support social health

Have a regular get-together with friends and families, this will give you inner happiness. Virtual meetings do not provide the same level of happiness as the in-person connection does. Get involved in your local community.  Set boundaries with people in your life that may increase stress or bring about toxic energy. 

Spiritual health – Spiritual health in connection with your inner soul and greater outer world. Support your spiritual health by

Spend time in nature. Spend a few minutes each day meditating If you are religious, take the time to practice your faith

Mental health - The last aspect of holistic health is our mental health. The big difference between our emotional and mental health is that our emotional health refers mostly to our daily mood and emotions, our mental health refers to our cognitive abilities that affect how our brain functions. Ways you can support mental health

Keep learning throughout your life, seek different learning opportunities. Consume a well-balanced diet. Avoid smoking and drinking. Improve gut health with gut-healing foods like prebiotic and probiotic-rich foods.
