The healthy diet for PCOS

A healthy diet is very important for keeping the weight in check with PCOS conditions. Know more about this healthy diet that needs to be taken to lose weight.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that causes irregular menstrual cycles due to a lack of monthly ovulation and increased levels of androgens (male hormones). PCOS-related hormonal abnormalities, insulin resistance, and inflammation make it difficult for women to lose weight.

Healthy diet for PCOS

Foods rich in antioxidants - Antioxidant-rich foods help to reduce inflammation and manage insulin levels. Fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, and whole grains are high in antioxidants.

Reduce dairy consumption - Limiting dairy consumption helps women with PCOS to lose weight and alleviate some of their hormonal PCOS symptoms. Reducing dairy consumption may also improve gut health and facilitate nutritional absorption.

Increase intake of fiber-rich foods - Foods high in fiber help to control blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, and promote intestinal health. Fiber-rich foods include whole grains, legumes and lentils, seeds, fruits and vegetables. As fiber-rich food keeps you full for a longer period, it may help women with PCOS lose weight. A high-fibre diet is also known to help lower insulin resistance.

Include lean protein in diet - Protein helps in blood sugar stabilization and induces feelings of fullness after a meal. This also promotes weight reduction by lowering cravings, increasing calorie burn, and controlling hunger hormones. Increased protein consumption aid in weight loss, particularly in PCOS women. One should include high-protein foods such as eggs, almonds, and seafood in daily diet.

Avoid refined food products and saturated fats – Refined food items and processed food products like cold drinks, and chips should be avoided. The most essential thing is to have the proper protein: carbohydrate and carbohydrates: fats ratio. A low-GI, low-carb diet may lower insulin levels in PCOS women and help in weight reduction. Red and white meat, bakery items, too much oil and ghee, fast foods should be avoided.
