Uzbekistani woman regains ability to walk after years following successful knee replacement surgery at Aakash Healthcare Super Specialty Hospital in New Delhi.

New Delhi, 21st May, 2024 - A 55-year-old female patient from Uzbekistan presented with a completely fused right knee joint, causing severe pain and immobility that greatly affected her quality of life. An X-ray revealed extensive damage with no visible joint gap, indicating severe osteoarthritis and joint fusion.

Given the severity of the condition, the surgical team at Aakash Healthcare Super Specialty Hospital, led by Dr. Aashish Chaudhry, Managing Director, Senior Consultant & Head, Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement, Aakash Healthcare Super Specialty Hospital, Dwarka, New Delhi performed a complex knee replacement surgery. The procedure involved opening the fused joint, releasing the soft tissues, and lengthening the quadriceps muscle before implanting a new prosthetic joint.

"The patient's case was particularly challenging due to the complete fusion of the joint. However, with meticulous planning and execution, we were able to restore functionality. The key was not just the joint replacement but also ensuring the surrounding soft tissues were adequately addressed to allow for proper movement," said Dr. Chaudhry.

During the surgery, the team carefully dissected the fused joint, preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. They meticulously released the soft tissues, including ligaments and tendons around the knee, to ensure mobility. The quadriceps muscle was lengthened to accommodate the new joint, allowing for a greater range of motion. The new knee joint was implanted, and alignment was rigorously checked. On the operating table, the patient demonstrated a good range of motion, a promising sign of a successful procedure.

Remarkably, the patient was able to take her first steps just a few hours after surgery. Early mobilization is crucial in knee replacement surgeries to prevent complications and promote quicker recovery. The patient reported no pain and was visibly relieved and happy, a stark contrast to her preoperative condition.

"Seeing the patient walk without pain just a few hours post-surgery was immensely rewarding. It's moments like these that highlight the impact of our work. The patient's resilience and positive attitude played a significant role in her recovery," noted Dr. Chaudhry.

The patient was closely monitored in the following days, with physical therapy sessions commencing immediately to maintain and improve the range of motion achieved during surgery. At the one-week follow-up, the patient continued to show excellent progress, with increasing strength and flexibility in the right knee.

This case highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach in dealing with complex joint fusions. The combination of soft tissue management and precise joint implantation can result in remarkable outcomes, significantly enhancing the patient's quality of life. Early mobilization and diligent postoperative care are critical to ensuring long-term success.
