Wind Energy Startups - Global Wind Day Special Feature

June 15 - Global Wind Day is an annual event organized by WindEurope and Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). It is a day to celebrate wind energy by organising events and information campaigns. Have a look at the key players that are working on wind energy and increasing the sustainability quotient of India.

Natural movement of air across the sea or land is known as wind. Wind energy is considered the best source of energy because it is environmentally friendly and a permanent shield against the rapidly increasing power prices. There are no greenhouse effects as there are no carbon dioxide emissions from wind.

India is importing oil or coal from other countries. More dependence on wind energy means self-sufficiency in our country. Wind energy production can create a number of jobs as it is labour intensive. There are organizations that have realized the benefits of wind energy and are contributing towards increasing our country’s self-sufficiency status. Two wind energy organizations formed in the year 2006 are working wonders in this sector.

Inox Wind is a Noida based wind renewable energy company. It began its operations in 2006 and manufactures WTG. Major services of Inox Wind are infrastructure development and maintenance, wind resource assessment, erection and commissioning. Its  manufacturing units are located in Una, Himachal Pradesh and Ahmedabad, Gujrat. The organization provides turnkey solutions to wind farm projects in India and high-quality WTGs based on sophisticated design and technology.

Orient Green is a joint venture between Bessemer Venture Partners and Shriram EPC. It is a Chennai based organization. The company was formed in 2006 and  is a name to reckon with in the renewable energy sector. It is the producer of wind energy, hydroelectric projects, biogas and biomass. Orient Green was formed in 2006. It is one of the largest independent power producers with a portfolio of more than 400 MW wind assets spread across Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat. The organization has a wind farm as well.

Since wind is a renewable energy source, energy produced from it does not have any negative impact on the environment. Wind turbines do not release emissions and hence air does not get polluted. There are other key players as well. More startups in this segment would do good to both the environment as well as our country.
