It is a well-known fact that aerobic exercise strengthens brain and contributes to the growth of the neurons. But a recent study has established a close link between yoga and improvement in brain function similar to aerobic exercises.
The study used brain-imaging techniques such as MRI, functional MRI or single photon emission computerized tomography. The yoga that was chosen for study was Hatha Yoga which includes body movement, meditation and breathing exercises.
The researchers identified some brain regions that consistently come up, and were very different from the exercise research. For example, an increase in the volume of hippocampus was seen with yoga practice. Studies looking at brain effects of aerobic exercise have shown a similar increase in hippocampus size over time. The hippocampus is known to be associated with memory processing and is known to shrink with age.
Though the research points to yoga being beneficial for healthy brain function, more needs to be done to arrive at conclusive proof, say researchers.
