17 year old found dead: Alarming Rise in Suicides Among NEET Aspirants in Kota

▴ neet student suicide
The city of Kota, known for its coaching centres, has unfortunately become synonymous with a concerning trend - a rising number of suicides among NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) aspirants. This distressing issue has raised serious concerns among stakeholders, educational institutions, and the government. In an effort to combat this crisis, preventive measures are being actively sought to create a supportive environment for these teenagers.

It's really unfortunate to hear about the increasing number of suicides in Kota, specifically among NEET aspirants who are under a lot of academic pressure. This article reports that a 17-year-old student from Uttar Pradesh was found dead at a rented accommodation in Kota, taking the number of such cases in Rajasthan’s coaching hub to four this month. It's also concerning to learn that 15 students have died by suicide in Kota this year so far and that the number of suicides has been consistent over the years

Alarming Statistics
According to recent data, Kota has witnessed a significant increase in suicides among NEET aspirants, further exacerbating the mental health crisis gripping our nation. Some stark statistics include:

1.  15 students have already lost their lives to suicide in Kota this year alone.
2.  The death toll has risen to four within a month, with a recent tragic case involving a 17-year-old student.
3.  The number of suicides has remained consistently high over the years, indicating a persistent issue that requires immediate attention.

Key Facts
These distressing statistics underscore the issue's magnitude and emphasize the need for urgent intervention. Some key facts to consider are:

1. Academic pressure: The rigorous preparation demanded by NEET exams often leads to extreme stress, mental exhaustion, and anxiety among students.
2. Away from home: Many students come from different states, leaving behind the familiarity and support of their families, which can contribute to the feeling of isolation.
3. Lack of emotional support: Students may struggle to find a safe space to share their concerns, fears, and stresses, exacerbating their emotional turmoil.
4. Limited recreational activities: The monotonous routine of constant study, coaching classes, and competitive pressure can hinder the holistic development of students and impact their mental well-being.

Preventing Suicides Among Teenagers
Addressing this concerning issue requires a multi-faceted approach that touches upon multiple aspects of the student's lives. Some practical steps that can be taken to prevent suicides among teenagers include:

1. Increased mental health support: Establishing dedicated counselling services within educational institutions to provide emotional and psychological support to students.
2. Promoting open communication: Encouraging students to share their concerns and fostering a supportive environment that accepts and validates their struggles.
3. Holistic development: Ensuring a balanced schedule that includes leisure activities, sports, and hobbies to alleviate stress and promote overall well-being.
4. Educating stakeholders: Conduct awareness programs for parents, teachers, coaching centre staff, and students themselves to spot warning signs and seek timely intervention.
5. Community involvement: Organizations, NGOs, and community members can collaborate to provide a network of support for vulnerable students, offering guidance, mentorship, and counselling services.
6. Strengthening regulations: The government should consider implementing and enforcing regulations on coaching centres to ensure a healthy and supportive learning environment.

The state government is reportedly considering a law to regulate private educational institutes in order to ease the academic pressure on students, especially those enrolled at coaching centres. The Rajasthan Police have also set up a cell for regular interactions with students at coaching centres to deal with the problem. Furthermore, the Kota administration has made the appointment of counsellors, weekly offs, recreation days, and shuffled test schedules compulsory after the death of 17 students in 2016.

The rising number of suicides among NEET aspirants in Kota is a wake-up call for society as a whole. It demands urgent action to mitigate academic pressure, promote mental well-being, and create a supportive environment for young minds. By implementing preventive measures, fostering open dialogue, and enhancing mental health support, we can work collectively to prevent the tragic loss of lives and create a brighter future for NEET aspirants in Kota and the nation as a whole.
