Endometriosis: The Pain You Shouldn’t Ignore

▴ Endometriosis
Endometriosis often hides behind “normal” period pain. Misunderstood and underdiagnosed, it affects millions silently. This story traces one woman’s long road to a diagnosis—revealing why this condition deserves more attention, not dismissal.

How much pain is too much during your period?
This is a question that many women never ask until it's too late. Endometriosis is more than just a difficult time. It's a chronic illness that, if ignored, may take over your life.
The Story of Sukriti: A Decade of Dismissal
Sukriti's suffering started when she was just fifteen years old. She was left curled up on the floor by the acute, stabbing cramps that came with her period. It was described to her as "just normal." Doctors said it was "part of growing up." She believed them.
School was missed. So were exams. Painkillers stopped working. By 19, Sukriti was avoiding social outings. By 22, the pain was a monthly punishment. Hot water bags, home remedies—nothing helped. She stopped talking about it. What was the point?
At 25, things got worse. The pain no longer followed a cycle. It arrived uninvited—during work meetings, walks, even while resting. Sukriti started noticing bloating, fatigue, and lower back pain. Her periods became heavier. Then came painful sex.
Still, her concerns were brushed aside. “Maybe it’s stress,” one doctor said. Another suggested antidepressants.
Things only changed after she met a gynecologist who listened. A transvaginal ultrasound revealed ovarian cysts. An MRI followed. Finally, the word was said: Endometriosis.
She had stage III. Surgery was advised. Hormonal therapy, too. It was a relief—but also a reminder. Years had been lost. Not because help wasn’t available. But because no one looked deeper.
What Is Endometriosis?
Outside the uterus, tissue that is comparable to the uterine lining grows. It responds to hormones in the same way as ordinary endometrium does—but has nowhere to go. Pain. Inflammation. Scar tissue. Sometimes, infertility.
One in ten women worldwide suffer from endometriosis. On average, the diagnosis can take
seven to ten years. It is often mistaken for bad periods, IBS, or stress.
Symptoms to Watch
● Severe cramps that disrupt daily life
● Pain during or after sex
● Painful bowel movements or urination during periods
● Chronic fatigue
● Heavy or irregular periods
● Infertility or difficulty conceiving
These signs should not be ignored.
What Can You Do?
Although there isn't a cure, it can be controlled. The stage, symptoms, and life objectives all
influence the course of treatment.
Options include:
● Taking Hormonal pills or IUDs
● A Laparoscopic surgery
● Lifestyle changes
● Pain management therapies
Early detection makes a big difference. Awareness helps start the conversation sooner.
The Bigger Picture
Sukriti’s story is not unique. It echoes thousands of others. What if someone had believed her at
15? How different would her twenties have been?
Endometriosis doesn’t scream. It whispers. And that’s why it gets missed.
But it’s time to listen. To ask the hard questions. To stop normalizing pain.
Because it isn’t always “just a period.” Sometimes, it’s something far more serious.
