The oldest medical institute of Mumbai, Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital and Nowrosjee Wadia hospital combined has shut doors for patients citing a shortage of funds of Rs229 crore. The occupancy of the hospital, having 830 seats in total had dropped to 300 over the past week and doctors are strictly instructed on Friday to not admit any new patient because of the emergency stock of medicines would last for less than two days.
Following the simmering spat been the BMC and therefore the government with hospitals over fund, the latter started releasing all patients, even those in critical conditions.
The hospitals closed bone marrow transplant, cardiac surgery, paediatric neurosurgery, paediatric nephrology, general surgery, orthopaedic, haematoid oncology department, cosmetic surgery and pathology departments last week. The vendors having dues in crores have stopped supplying medicines and surgical instruments, therefore, the hospitals are forced to shut down their operations.
According to a senior officer from the executive department of the hospitals, the BMC hasn’t paid dues of Rs 136 crore since 2017
Reportedly, the BMC released Rs 14 crore and claims that it had been the last instalment of their overall dues. The hospitals have had used that cash settling salaries of their 1,500-odd employees.
BMC claims the civic body bears 75 per cent of the operational cost at Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital while at Nowrosjee Wadia hospital .
